When Beacon Health’s facilities team looked at two of their aging rooftop air handling units, they knew they could not wait much longer to take action. AHU-1 and AHU-3 were failing, and full replacement had emerged as the obvious path forward. The estimated price tag, $3.65 million, told a different story, and that was before the costs of re-engineering for new units, crane logistics, wall demolition and temporary conditioning during downtime. For a hospital running 24/7, the prospect of operational disruption made an already difficult case even harder to justify.
Rather than default to AHU replacement, the Beacon Health facilities team partnered with WTI PureAir to opt for an HVAC restoration. Working overnight to keep the hospital operational, the team restored each unit, from deep-cleaning coils to applying a corrosion- and microbial-resistant coating and upgrading drain pans to anti-viral and anti-microbial standards.
The ECM fan array retrofit eliminated belts and grease fittings, replacing them with a redundant system where a failed fan is resolved by a simple swap, not a service call. When the crew left the rooftop, both units were performing like new and backed by a 5-year parts and labor warranty. In the end, Beacon Health had saved more than $2 million without missing an hour of operation.
